PTSD and First Responders

Psychological support for trauma and PTSD

Police officers, paramedics, firefighters and other emergency service personnel may be exposed to distressing or traumatic events as part of their work. Repeated exposure to trauma, critical incidents and high-pressure situations can affect psychological wellbeing, relationships, sleep and day-to-day functioning.

At Wavves Psychology, I provide psychological treatment for people experiencing PTSD and trauma-related difficulties, including those arising from occupational experiences.

Understanding PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop following exposure to a traumatic event. Symptoms may include intrusive memories, nightmares, avoidance of reminders, heightened alertness, irritability, difficulties sleeping and feeling persistently on edge.

For some people, symptoms emerge soon after an incident. For others, difficulties may become more apparent over time or following repeated exposure to distressing experiences.

Experiences of trauma are individual, and treatment is tailored to each person's circumstances, symptoms and recovery goals.

Psychological treatment

Treatment for PTSD may incorporate evidence-based trauma-focused approaches, including Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), where clinically appropriate. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) may also be incorporated according to individual needs.

Treatment may focus on reducing trauma-related symptoms, improving emotional regulation and sleep, increasing engagement in everyday activities, and supporting recovery and functioning.

The pace and approach to treatment are guided by individual needs, clinical assessment and collaborative treatment planning.

Support for first responders

Seeking psychological support can be difficult, particularly for people working in demanding environments where they may feel pressure to remain capable and composed.

Psychological treatment provides an opportunity to address the impact of traumatic experiences in a confidential, supportive and professional setting.

Telehealth appointments may also provide access to treatment for first responders living in regional and remote areas.
